What do people think about when dissociating when discussing a trauma? Im thinking back to physical place of the trauma- like I’m imaging being back there. How is that an escape or providing any relief, as I understand the role of dissociation to be?

Why does dissociation happen? I can just be sitting in a restaurant with the people I love and feel close to then all of a sudden I will feel like I'm in a dream, or nothing is real, or I'm actually dead, but I've had no triggers in my opinion.

What does it mean to dissociate? My therapist calmly called out my name and then asked me where I was. I was confused because I was present with him or so I thought. He told me that I disassociated. I will ask him but I thought I’d try Quora first.

What is "dissociation" exactly? I don't feel much emotions/urges like normal people. I choose everything I do & set habits. But I'm not seeing illusions. We all see the same world, don't we? I have good memory. How exactly am I fooling myself?
