I witnessed my dad hit my mom once. She screamed. How can I tell if this was abuse? I only saw it once and I don’t know if it’s happened before.

What do I do? My 3yr old son got ketchup on my husbands jacket and that made him verbally abusive towards me. I tried to call my parents and he snatched my phone and said he will smash it across my head. I knew to be quiet after this.
