Early labor: The cervix begins to soften, thin out, and gradually open. This process is called effacement and dilation. Effacement refers to the thinning of the cervix, and dilation refers to the opening of the cervix.
Contractions: The uterine muscles contract regularly during labor. These contractions help push the baby downward and put pressure on the cervix, causing it to dilate further.
Active labor: As labor progresses, the contractions become stronger and more frequent, causing the cervix to continue dilating. The cervix needs to reach a diameter of about 10 centimeters (approximately the size of a bagel's inner hole) to allow the baby to pass through.
