Narcissists generally prioritize their own needs and desires over those of others, including their children. Their self-centeredness and lack of empathy can lead them to neglect or exploit their children emotionally and psychologically. They may view their children as extensions of themselves rather than unique individuals with their own needs and feelings.

While some narcissistic parents may appear to be involved in their children's lives, their involvement is often driven by their need for admiration and control rather than genuine care and concern for their children's well-being. They may use their children as props to boost their self-esteem, showing them off to others as a reflection of their own success and superiority.

Narcissistic parents may also engage in manipulative tactics, emotional abuse, or neglect, leaving their children feeling unloved, unsupported, and emotionally scarred. These children may grow up feeling like they need to constantly seek their parent's approval or validation, perpetuating a cycle of emotional dependence.

It's important to note that not every self-centered or emotionally distant parent is necessarily a narcissist. Narcissism exists on a spectrum, and some parents may exhibit narcissistic traits without meeting the criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). Nevertheless, any form of emotional neglect or abuse can have significant negative effects on a child's development and well-being.

If you suspect that you or someone you know is dealing with a narcissistic parent or are concerned about the well-being of a child in such a situation, seeking help from a mental health professional or counselor can be beneficial in understanding and addressing the dynamics involved.
